Dalleagles School Log, 31st January 1983
“Severe weather developed in the course of the afternoon,
reaching blizzard proportions by midday.  The few country
pupils present were collected and taken home by 11am,
the remaining pupils dismissed at 12.30 approx. Such was
the severity of the storm that no buses able to reach the
school, the pupils had to be escorted – ‘roped together’
on foot.”

I was interested to see the log book. In 1881, my grandfather’s sister Jeanie Crum aged 21 was a teacher at Dalleagles School, lodging with a Campbell family. I’ve recently learned her uncle Kenneth Mackenzie of New Cumnock Colliery was on the school board, thus it would seem a bit of nepotism was the order of the day. Jeanie’s father John Crum, stationer of Glasgow, along with other Scottish businessmen had been badly affected by the American civil war and the unrest which followed. This resulted in the USA blockading British ships from entering their waters in an effort to stop goods reaching the rebels. Many businesses went bankrupt as a result.

    Regards,
    Rena McCarthy (ms Crum)
